AF4Q FOLLOW UP STORY by Terry Yeager

My name is Terry Yeager. About six months ago I wrote an AF4Q story that was published on the Home AF4Q website. In that story, I said I had become a patient/partner with York Wellspan Endocrinology. At that time, my diabetes was out of control. I weighed 266 pounds and my A1C was 8.3. Pretty bad!! Since then, I have been to several more AF4Q meetings and attended webinars as well as several more P/P meetings with our practice. In those meetings, I learned about the "I Can Challenge" program that is sponsored by AF4Q and promoted by Wellspan.

The program is directed at those with high blood pressure and diabetics. The twelve week program teaches you how to eat in moderation and how to avoid foods that are unhealthy. There are two ways you can enter the program. One is to sign up and attend twelve meetings in consecutive weeks. There is a $25 up front fee, but it is returned if you successfully finish the program. The second way is the way I chose. I went to the "I Can Challenge" website and downloaded the reference material. It is about 40 pages long. I then meticulously followed all the instructions. I made some short range and some long range goals, per the plan.

Don't get me wrong, it really was a challenge. I am convinced that you really want to help yourself or all the challenges in the world won't help. It can be tough, but if I did it, so can you. The bottom line is that in the last six months, I have lost 34 pounds, and my A1C went from 8.3 to 6.8. I have since had all the associated blood tests (LDL, HDL, cholesterol, thyroid, etc.) and all have come back well within the acceptable ranges. I don't want to even talk about what they were. I hope anyone who reads this will be motivated, as I was, to become an advocate for your health.
