A Closer Look at Our AF4Q Leaders

Improving patient care and patient safety is something AF4Q – South Central PA strives for day in and day out through its initiatives. But, it’s also at the top of Donna Balsley’s list at Quality Insights of Pennsylvania. Donna, Director of Healthcare Quality Improvement is quite the fit for AF4Q – South Central PA as she is responsible for overseeing the patient care and safety in the hospital and nursing home settings across the state for Quality Insights.

Recognizing she’s a great match for AF4Q, Donna sits on the leadership team for AF4Q to offer her perspective. Therefore, we took a few minutes of Donna’s time to learn why she and Quality Insights agreed to be a part of the collaborative.

Is AF4Q important for the community? And if yes, why?

“AF4Q is an important component of the community. It offers collaboration, which is so important in health care because no one can fix the health care issues on their own.”

“For example, Quality Insights of Pennsylvania is collaborating with AF4Q – South Central PA on projects relating to readmissions and adverse drug events.  We’re working with physicians’ practices through initiatives like the Planned Care Collaborative to establish a team of providers to focus on reducing medical errors, and helping patients get proper monitoring done….the alliance is really able to promote wellness and improve the care patients are receiving.”

What do you think about public reporting?

“I feel that public reporting provides transparency in health care. For patients, it provides one consideration in the choice of a provider and a comparison of the quality of care. For providers, it offers an opportunity to showcase successes and benchmark with other similar providers.”

What’s the biggest challenge in health care?

“Within health care, we’re challenged in that we have limited resources. The ability to collaborate and share best practices provides an opportunity to share resources.”
After talking health care, we found out a little more about Donna’s personal side.

What superpower would you love to have?

“If having a superpower was an option, I would love to be able to see into the future.”
When you’re not working, what are you doing?

“I love being able to spend as much of my free time as possible with my two grandchildren who are both under the age of five.”

What are some of your favorites?

“I love ice cream, particularly the Raspberry flavor. And, Jackson Browne is my favorite musician for sure.”
