Looking Inside AF4Q – South Central PA’s Leaders

Aligning Forces for Quality – South Central PA started in 2007, and Matt Vogel, vice president of Provider Relations and Contracting for Highmark Blue Shield has been a witness of the organization’ s growth since the beginning.

As a member of AF4Q SCPA’s Leadership Team, Matt works side-by-side with the other AF4Q leaders to prioritize the initiatives and to make sure they’re achieving the goals set forth by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

One of those initiatives and a very big accomplishment, according to Matt, is the public reporting and quality measurement. “We did a great job in getting this rolling and making the data public through our Community Checkup . I believe that the Community Checkup not only helps providers and patients better engage and discuss their care, but as we continue adding to it, it will help us address some of the cost issues that exist in healthcare,” he said.

According to Matt, affordability of health care is one of the biggest challenges we face in healthcare today.

“With premiums rising, and healthcare costs doubling every seven to 10 years, there’s no sustainability for businesses. Businesses are dropping healthcare coverage because they can’t afford it. However, if businesses want to stay competitive, we need to find a way to make healthcare affordable so businesses can grow. Healthcare is a critical component of a business, as it’s typically the second biggest cost behind salaries,” he explained.

“Healthcare is a local issue, and AF4Q is the overarching organization that brings together everyone in a nonpartisan manner to really move healthcare forward,” Matt added.

Matt believes that AF4Q – South Central PA has done a good job with health delivery and creating movement between providers and patients. “I’m excited to get more businesses involved and work towards lowering costs while improving quality. I really hope to see York and Adams counties listed as the highest quality and lowest cost counties for healthcare.”

Throughout his professional career, Matt has remained devoted to improving the quality of healthcare for all. But, he also takes time for himself and his family. He enjoys coaching his son and daughter’s basketball and soccer teams. Golfing and skiing are pretty high on the list for spare time activities also.

Finally, we asked Matt to name one thing off of his bucket list, and he said, “Golf at St. Andrews in Ireland.” While he hasn’t made it to Ireland, he has been to Salzburg, Austria; the bottom of Grand Canyon; and, Mount Rainier. We have a feeling he’ll work Ireland in there!
