Help Eliminate Health Disparities

Last month, AF4Q – South Central PA shared the findings from the Community Snapshot: Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities. Local practices and hospitals partnered to make an initial attempt to analyze currently collected race and ethnicity data to identify any gaps in the care pa tients with diabetes received. Based from the recommendations from the Snapshot, providers are being encouraged to put in additional effort in collecting data, making sure they understand it, and ensuring it’s being self-reported.

But the providers are only one side of the coin. To ensure everyone’s engaged, Aligning Forces for Quality – South Central PA’s leaders Jenny Englerth of Family First Health and Eve Gardner of Healthy York Networkare looking at the other side, which is the community. Englerth and Gardner arepreparing a question and answer session with community leaders from diverse demographics to get their feedback.

“We want to provide the community with an understanding of what’s happening when it comes to disparities and health care, what we’ve found in our community Snapshot and what we’re working to do. We really want to hear theaudience’s reaction, and learn what they’re seeing, hearing and feeling within the community. We want the audience to help us shape the way we move forward, and the dialogue for this issue,” said Englerth.

Following the outcome of the meeting, AF4Q – South Central PA will work with these individuals to build a smaller group of advocates to help tackle the issues at hand.

“What we’ve learned thus far won’t get fixed without community engagement. We’ll still have groups of individuals who can’t access health care or don’t trust our services if we don’t bring everyone together to fix it,” said Englerth.

If you or someone you know is interested in taking part in the question and answer session, please contact Jenny Englerthat (717) 801-4804 or Eve Gardner at (717) 851-6785.
